Class 11 Biology Chemical Coordination PARATHYROID GLAND

  • Four parathyroid glands are present on the back side of the thyroid gland, one pair each on two lobes of the thyroid gland.
  • They secrete peptide hormone called parathyroid hormone.
  • It is regulated by circulating levels of calcium ions.
  • It increases Ca2+ levels in the blood.
  • It acts on bones and stimulate resorption.
  • It also stimulates reabsorption of calcium ions by renal tubules and increases calcium ion absorption from the digested food.
  • Hence, we conclude that PTH is hypercalcemic hormone.
