Class 6 Maths Algebra Expressions with Variables

Expressions with Variables

Variables do not have a fix value. But since they are numbers, different operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division can be done on them. Expressions can also be formed containing variables. For e.g.:

3x +5. But only when the variable, in this case x, is given some value the expression can be evaluation. If x = 4, then the value of expression is 3(4) + 5= 17.

Expression can be formed in various ways. Some examples are as follows:

Problem: Give expressions for the following cases.

  • 7 added to p

=7 +p

  • p multiplied by 7

= p*7

  • p divided by 7

= p/7

  • 7 subtracted from – m

= -m-7

Problem: Give expressions in the following cases.

  • 11 added to 2m

= 11+2m

  • 11 subtracted from 2m

= 2m -11

  • 5 times y to which 3 is added

= 5y +3
