Congruence among Line Segments

Two line segments are congruent if they have the same length but they need not lie at the same angle or position on the plane.


In the above figure, AB is congruent to CD because the line segments coincide when placed one over other. We can write as AB ≅ CD

On the other hand, PQ is not congruent to RS because the line segments do not coincide when placed one over other.

When two line segments are congruent, we sometimes just say that the line segments are equal and we also write AB = CD. (To mean is AB ≅ CD).
