Class 8 Maths Comparing Quantities Finding Discount

Finding Discount

Discount is a reduction given on the Marked Price (MP) of the article. Discount of an item is calculated by subtracting its sale price from its marked price.

So, Discount = Marked price – Sale price

Problem: A shop gives 20% discount. What would the sale price of each of these be?

(a) A dress marked at Rs 120

(b) A pair of shoes marked at Rs 750

Solution:

(a) Marked price is same as the list price.

20% discount means that on Rs 100 (MP), the discount is Rs 20.

By unitary method, on Re 1 the discount will be Rs 20/100

On Rs 120, discount = Rs (20/120) * 100

= 100/6

= Rs 16.67

The sale price = (Rs 120 – Rs 16.67)

= Rs 103.33

(b) Marked price is same as the list price.

20% discount means that on Rs 100 (MP), the discount is Rs 20.

By unitary method, on Re 1 the discount will be Rs 20/100

On Rs 750, discount = Rs (20/750) * 100

= Rs (2 * 100)/75

= Rs (2 * 4)/3

= Rs 8/3

= Rs 2.67

The sale price = (Rs 750 – Rs 2.67)

= Rs 747.33
